What is Mandelic Acid?

Mandelic Acid is made from bitter almonds. It is great for treating hyperpigmentation, blocked pores, blackheads, and sun spots. It is ideal for all skin types including sensitive skin.

What is Malic Acid?

Malic acid is a mild acid and organic compound. It is generally found in fruits such as apples and various drinks where it contributes to their sour taste. It is said to be less harsh and more moisturising than Glycolic Acid skin peels, which makes it a good peel for sensitive skin types. Malic Acid is one of the Alpha Hydroxy acids (fruit acids). Fruit acids are nontoxic, naturally occurring substances, and are found in a variety of fruits such as, in tomatoes, pineapples, peaches, raspberries, cranberries and cherries among others.
Malic Acid is the only acid that also has the added benefit of acting as a humectant as well as all the other benefits it provides, meaning it’s an ingredient that attracts moisture to and traps it in the skin.

What is it used for?

A much weaker acid than Glycolic Acid, as an acid peel Mandelic and Malic Acid’s are most commonly used to help diminish fine lines and wrinkles, thoroughly cleanse and tighten pores, to minimize skin pigmentation, to moisturize the skin, to exfoliate the skin and get rid of old cells, and in general, to improve the skin's texture and appearance, leaving it softer and smoother. It’s also been recently found to alleviate symptoms of people suffering from fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome.
Mandelic and Malic Acid molecules are slightly larger than that of Glycolic Acid, and Lactic Acid, which stops it getting too deep into the epidermis. This is good news for people who find other peels a little too irritating. Mandelic Malic acid works on the epidermis, the upper layer of the skin. The normal shedding of the layer becomes regular. When applied to the skin, the acid lifts and removes dead cells, it dissolves the glue-like substance that holds these dead skin cells and debris to the skin to reveal skin underneath that is smoother, fresher, and healthier looking. Eventually, this layer becomes more uniform after a peel resulting in a smoother feel, look, and texture of the skin. As it works into the deeper layers of the epidermis, the appearance of the skin is improved. Increased blood flow through the skin produces a smooth, clear, younger looking appearance.
Since it works only on the top layer of the skin, the epidermis, it is not a deep peel. However, it does cause the elastic fibres in the dermis layer of the skin to be stimulated and produce new collagen.
Some of the skin conditions that can be improved with a Mandelic Malic peel are: sun-damaged skin, wrinkles that are not too deep, mild acne scars, age spots, dry skin and brown spots. It is the mildest and only humectant of all the peels and can also be used for hyper-pigmentation and on skin that is prone to dry patches and eczema. If you have sensitive skin it is best to start with a 20% or 30% solution which can be used every 5-7 days, or once the skin has healed from a previous peel.

Which Strength?
10% Mildest Peel for sensitive or fair skin and 1st time users. You will see slow results
20% Mild Peel for someone that has had a peel before, normal skin types, use for minor skin flaws
30% Medium peel for those who have used the 10% and 20% with no issues and are now ready to increase strength
If you have never had a chemical peel before, or if you have sensitive skin, it is recommended that first time users start with a 20% Malic Acid solution and leave on the skin for only 1-2 minutes. Test a tiny, small portion of your cheek to get an idea of how well your skin will tolerate this percentage of Malic Acid. Strengths above 30% should not be applied to the face. The 40%, 50% and 60% level of Malic Acid Chemical Peel is recommended for treatment on the body only, and by people who have used this product previously on the body, and know that their skin can tolerate this level of strength.
Application:
Once the skin is thoroughly cleansed with an oil free cleanser, you can apply the Mandelic Malic Acid with a cotton pad. You may experience slight stinging or tingling while the Mandelic Malic Acid is on the skin. Once activation time has passed you can apply a neutraliser. If you have not purchased one of our neutralisers you can make one by mixing a teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda in water and applying it to the face.
Post Peel:
The skin may turn pink but, will return to its normal colour within a couple of hours, or 1 to 2 days. When used correctly there shouldn't be any persistent redness, burning, or blistering. If you experience these symptoms seek medical treatment and discontinue use. This will happen when the product is not used correctly, you are using too high of Mandelic Malic Acid strength, or if your skin is too sensitive to tolerate a chemical peel. It is normal for the skin to appear dry or flaky 1 to 2 days after use if you’re using one of the stronger strengths. That means the product is working. This is the dead skin shedding, allowing a healthy layer to come to the surface. Not all people experience peeling, or flaking, but if heavy peeling or slight scabbing occurs, apply a petroleum based product, or antibiotic ointment to help speed healing.
If you are using this product to control acne, remember that your acne will appear worse before it looks better. The reason is that as the dead skin layers are peeled from the face, the acne will be brought to the surface. This is actually accelerating the healing process. In this case, don’t be discouraged and continue recommended use to see improvement.
How often?
It is recommended that you use the Mandelic Malic Acid Chemical Peel solution once weekly for 6 weeks, then rest your skin for 2 weeks (to allow skin cells to naturally rejuvenate). After the 2 week rest, you may start another 6 week cycle. Continue this cycle until you achieve desired results. Certain scars or deep wrinkles may require several cycles of treatment. This product contains alpha hydroxy acid which may increase skin sensitivity to the sun and increase the likelihood of sun damage or sunburn. Be certain to use sunscreen protection of at least spf 25 while using this product and after you discontinue use.
