What is Glycolic Acid?

Glycolic Acid is one of the naturally occurring fruit acids derived from sugar cane. The active ingredients of fruit acids when purified are called “Alpha Hydroxy Acids” (AHA).

What is Lactic Acid?

Lactic Acid is said to be less harsh and more moisturizing than Glycolic Acid skin peels. Lactic is one of the Alpha Hydroxy acids (fruit acids). Fruit acids are nontoxic, naturally occurring substances, and are found in a variety of fruits, such as grapes, apples and sugar cane. Other fruit acids are Citric, Malic, Glycolic and Pyruvic Acids. Lactic acid is a mild AHA acid that is often derived from milk so people with an intolerance to milk or dairy products should not use this acid

What is Glycolic Lactic Acid used for?

When used as prescribed, with a combination of superficial peels and home maintenance, the gradual removal of the top layer of skin will result in a fresher, rejuvenated complexion.

Glycolic Acid works on the epidermis, the upper layer of the skin. The normal shedding of the layer becomes regular. When applied to the skin, the acid lifts and removes dead cells to reveal skin underneath that is smoother, fresher, and healthier looking. Eventually, this layer becomes more uniform after a peel resulting in a smoother feel, look, and texture of the skin. As it works into the deeper layers of the epidermis, the appearance of the skin is improved. Increased blood flow through the skin produces a smooth, clear, younger looking appearance.

Lactic Acid is weaker than Glycolic, and is most commonly used for the removal of sun spots, hyper-pigmentation, liver spots and other skin discolorations and is suitable for all skin types.  A Lactic Acid peel is also recommended for the reduction of Rosacea as it is one of the milder peels. Lactic Acid is a thorough exfoliator, removing the outer layers of thickened or damaged skin, leaving a smoother and healthier appearance. With prolonged use, Lactic Acid has been found to be beneficial in improving dry skin, treating age spots, improving oily and acne prone skin, and decreasing fine lines and wrinkles.

Using Glycolic and Lactic together gives more benefits and is great for combination skin types, and for those that want added moisturising benefits to their Glycolic Peel. Glycolic and Lactic may be beneficial for treating:

Superficial Acne Scars

Acne Cysts

Dry Skin

Dull Complexion

Age Spots

Uneven Skin Tone

Fine Wrinkles

Sun Damaged Skin

Which Strength?

20% Extra Mild Peel for sensitive or fair skin and 1st time users. You will see slow results

30% Mild Peel for normal skin types, and for those that want to upgrade from 20%
40% Medium Peel for someone that has had a peel before, doesn't have sensitive skin, use for minor skin flaws
50% Strong peel for experienced users that have acne, deeper scars, serious skin flaws

60% Maximum strength for experienced or professionals only!

(All our peels can be diluted should you feel the peel you picked is too strong)

If you have never had a chemical peel before, or if you have sensitive skin, it is recommended that first time users start with the 20% or 30% Glycolic Acid solution and leave on the skin for only 1-2 minutes. Test a tiny, small portion of your cheek to get an idea of how well your skin will tolerate this percentage of Glycolic Acid. Strengths above 30% should not be applied to the face. The 40%, 50% and 60% level of Glycolic Acid Chemical Peel is recommended for treatment on the body only, and by people who have used this product previously on the body, and know that their skin can tolerate this level of strength. 70% is recommended for use on hands and feet, or similar areas or for diluting to a milder strength.

Application:

Once the skin is thoroughly cleansed with an oil free cleanser, you can apply the Glycolic Lactic Acid with one of our applicator brushes, or with a cotton pad. You may experience slight stinging or tingling while the Glycolic Lactic Acid is on the skin. Once activation time has passed you can apply a neutraliser. If you have not purchased one of our neutralisers you can make one by mixing a teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda in water and applying it to the face.

Post Peel:

The skin may turn pink but, will return to its normal colour within 1 to 2 days. When used correctly there shouldn't be any redness, burning, or blistering. If you experience these symptoms seek medical treatment and discontinue use. This will happen when the product is not used correctly, you are using too high of Glycolic Lactic Acid strength, or if your skin is too sensitive to handle a chemical peel. It is normal for the skin to “peel” and appear flaky 1 to 2 days after use. That means the product is working. This is the dead skin shedding, allowing a healthy layer to come to the surface. Not all people experience peeling, or flaking, but if heavy peeling or slight scabbing occurs, apply a petroleum based product, or antibiotic ointment to help speed healing.

If you are using this product to control acne, remember that your acne will appear worse before it looks better. The reason is that as the dead skin layers are peeled from the face, the acne will be brought to the surface. This is actually accelerating the healing process. In this case, don’t be discouraged and continue recommended use to see improvement.

How often?

It is recommended that you use the Glycolic Lactic Acid Chemical Peel solution once weekly for 6 weeks, then rest your skin for 2 weeks (to allow skin cells to naturally rejuvenate). After the 2 weeks rest, you may start another 6 weeks cycle.  Continue this cycle until you achieve desired results. Certain scars or deep wrinkles may require several cycles of treatment. This product contains alpha hydroxy acid which may increase skin sensitivity to the sun and increase the likelihood of sun damage or sunburn. Be certain to use sunscreen protection of at least spf 25 while using this product and after you discontinue use.
